As ReAct marks 20 years of global action on antimicrobial resistance, we’re celebrating the people who have been at the heart of the movement from the very beginning. Elisabeth Lindström from ReAct Europe offers a unique, foundational perspective. Joining in 2005 as just the third staff member, she is now celebrating an incredible 20-year journey with the organization. In this interview she reflects on what inspired her to help build the network from scratch, the challenges and rewards of seeing it grow across continents, and the deeply respectful and passionate spirit that defines the ReAct team.

What inspired you to join ReAct, and how has your journey been so far?

– When I joined ReAct in the autumn of 2005, there were only two people employed, just beginning to set up the initiative. I came in as the third staff member, as project coordinator. What inspired me at the time was the unique opportunity to help build something from the very beginning, to be part of shaping an organization with a global mission to improve and protect people’s health, particularly among the most vulnerable.

– I was drawn to the diversity of the work: being part of a small, passionate team where every voice mattered, and where our founder’s vision and energy set the tone.

– My journey since then has been both long and rewarding, I am now celebrating 20 years with ReAct. Over this time, the organization has grown roots across continents, expanded through our nodes, and developed organically, guided by what has proven effective. It has been intense and challenging, but also deeply rewarding: I have had the privilege of meeting inspiring people from all over the world, and I am proud of the many results we have achieved together. At the same time, we have faced significant challenges, not least the constant need to secure funding that matches both our credibility and our moral compass.

What’s one lesson or experience at ReAct that has shaped you professionally or personally?

– Perhaps the most powerful lesson has been to truly grasp the urgency of the problem we are working on. We are approaching a time when infections we take for granted can easily be cured, like pneumonia or sepsis, may no longer be treatable. This realization has shaped both my professional and personal outlook. It has shown me how crucial it is to work across all levels, from grassroots mobilization to high-level policy change, and that collaboration at every step can genuinely make a difference.

What’s something unique or special about the ReAct team or working environment that you appreciate?

– What I value most in the ReAct team is the combination of passion, determination, and professionalism with a deep sense of respect and understanding. Across all our global nodes, I encounter colleagues who are not only committed to the cause but who also carry a strong belief in equality and in every person’s right to be heard. It is this spirit that makes working at ReAct so unique and meaningful.

The story of ReAct began 20 years ago with a small group of passionate global health advocates, several of whom are still part of the network today. Driven by the urgency of antibiotic resistance, ReAct has grown into a global movement with offices across four continents, influencing policy, empowering communities, and shaping governance.

Despite progress, global efforts remain insufficient, and urgent action is needed. ReAct remains committed to driving stronger responses to safeguard effective antibiotics for all.

ReAct’s 20-year journey has transformed AMR governance, strengthened health systems, and mobilized communities worldwide. As we look to the future, we invite partners and funders to join us in scaling impact, driving innovation, and securing sustainable solutions — for a world free from untreatable infections.
