The People to Leaders: Act on AMR Now! campaign and its Call for Global Action has garnered significant support, with almost 730 signatures from more than 85 countries, including almost 200 signatures from community and civil society groups. On 24 September 2024, these signatures were presented at a United Nations General Assembly side event in New York, demonstrating the widespread concern and commitment to addressing this global health crisis.
Launched on April 5, 2023, by ReAct and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) the People to Leaders: Act on AMR Now! campaign has emerged as a powerful global movement, uniting communities, civil society groups, health professionals, scientists, educators, artists, and indigenous representatives in the fight against antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The initiative aims to urge world leaders to address the growing threat of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and recognize the vital role of communities and civil society in combating AMR.
Remarkable diversity of signatures
The diversity of organizations supporting the campaign is remarkable, spanning across continents and sectors. Signatories include medical associations, environmental groups, educational institutions, patient advocacy organizations, and indigenous representatives. From the Biomedical Science Student Association in The Gambia to the Stockholm International Water Institute in Sweden, the campaign has united voices from various backgrounds and expertise.
Notable supporters include global health organizations like Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) International, academic institutions such as Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia, and grassroots organizations like the Community of Poultry Farmers in Côte d’Ivoire. The campaign has also garnered support from professional bodies such as the Microbiology Society in the United Kingdom and patient groups like the Alliance of Patients’ Organisations Singapore.
