From people to leaders: Act on AMR now!

The global campaign From People to Leaders: Act on AMR NOW was an initiative to amplify and empower the voices of communities and civil society in the global response to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This ahead of the United Nations High-Level Meeting on AMR at the UN General Assembly in September 2024.

730 signatures in total, of which almost 200 from communities and civil society groups was handed over to global leaders in New York during the United Nations General Assembly in September 2024.

RECOGNITION OF AMR AS A GLOBAL HEALTH THREAT

  • Acknowledging AMR’s devastating impact on health, economies, and ecosystems. Acknowledging AMR as a global healt threat is essential for mobilizing resources and efforts to address it effectively and sustainably.

PROMOTION OF COMMUNITIES AND CIVIL SOCIETY ENGAGEMENT AND INCLUSIVE GOVERNANCE

  • Highlighting the need to involve communities and civil society in the regional, national, and global AMR response.
  • Urges governments to create mechanisms for a meaningful, inclusive, and transparent participation of communities and civil society , and enhance accountability for more equitable and effective strategies.

ADVOCACY FOR POPULATIONS IN SITUATIONS OF VULNERABILITY

  • Emphasizes AMR’s disproportionate impact on populations in situations of vulnerability and weakened health systems.
  • Advocating for equitable responses to ensure populations in situations of vulnerability receive adequate and tailored support in addressing AMR.
