On December 4th, ReAct Latin America and the ReAct global network will celebrate an important milestone: 20 years of collective work in addressing antibiotic resistance. This with a regional webinar that share and discuss the rich material produced in Latin America together with a numerous range of collaborators and stake holders. Across the globe, the ReAct network has worked for two decades with communities, researchers, artists, social leaders, and decision-makers to build a different narrative: one that places life at the center and understands health as an inseparable web of human beings, animals, plants, territories, and microorganisms. ReAct 20 webinar: A catalog of ReAct Latin America region memory and future
Since ReAct’s inception, we have been committed to a pioneering approach, especially in the Latin America region: addressing antibiotic resistance from a One Health perspective, recognizing that health problems cannot be separated from environmental, social, and cultural issues. In a global scenario where the dominant discourse on antibiotics was imbued with metaphors of war – we chose the path of solidarity, cooperation, and collective care.
At the regional virtual celebration on 4th of DECEMBER will see the launch of the ReAct Latin America publications catalog, a compendium that brings together contributions from communities, researchers, and regional and international collaborators on AMR in Latin America.
The catalog is organized into several sections that reflect the richness and diversity of these 20 years of regional work:
- “Communities and Antibiotics” brings together local experiences that show how the active participation of communities has been key in defending health and territory.
- “Educational Toolkit, School Health, and the Microbial World” brings together educational materials and creative proposals for working with children, young people, and teachers, bringing AMR closer to popular education and everyday life.
- The section “Food and Antibiotics” addresses the relationship between food production, the use of antimicrobials, and their impacts on environmental and human health, proposing sustainable alternatives.
- In the publication “Microbiome: Reimagining Resistance,” an innovative horizon opens up for understanding the complex interaction between microorganisms, bodies, and ecosystems, inviting us to abandon the logic of war against microbes. Finally, the various calls developed over two decades reflect the voices of communities, researchers, and activists from the region, who have demanded structural changes and ethical and political commitments in response to AMR.
A network that transformed from the local to the global
Over the past 20 years, ReAct has established itself across the globe in Europe, Africa, Asia Pacific and in Latin America as a pioneering network in promoting community action against AMR.
Our initiatives have shown that local participation not only enriches scientific and political debate, but also opens the way for innovative and sustainable solutions. From popular education processes to academic research, from artistic campaigns to working with governments, the contribution has always been collective and diverse.
